Michael Smith

Michael Smith is a freelance journalist and author working with Initiatives of Change. He is head of business programmes for Initiatives of Change UK and joint co-ordinator, UK, of Caux Initiatives for Business. He is one of the coordinators of IofC's initiatives on 'Trust and Integrity in the Global Economy' in Caux, Switzerland and in the UK, and is the author of a book of that title (Caux Books and St Paul Press, India, 2009).

Mike was born in 1947 and has worked with MRA/IofC since he was 19. He trained in publishing with MRA in the late 1960s, and qualified in typography and print design at the London College of Printing in 1970. He served for three years in India, 1971-74, as production manager of the newsweekly magazine Himmat, and has since visited India 12 times, reporting stories of industrial development. He and Jan were married in 1981 and they spent a year with MRA in the USA, 1984-85. In 1987 Mike became a founding co-editor of For A Change magazine where he was Managing Editor and then Associate Editor. His book on Trust and integrity is a collection of stories of ethical business people and social activists who have been inspired by the values and spirit of IofC. It follows his earlier book, Beyond the Bottom Line. He is also the author of a booklet, The Sound of Silence--how to find inspiration in the age of information, written for the websurfing generation which has been translated into several languages. His latest book is The Fullness of Life: reflections on the Lord's Prayer for today's world (2012). He has written over 40 obituaries of the pioneers of MRA/IofC for national newspapers. He and his wife Jan have two children, Chloe (b. 1982) and Nicholas (b. 1987) and they live in Wimbledon.
